The ASPB Executive Committee provides funding & guidance for SURF. The program thrives thanks to the volunteer work of the SURF Committee.

The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship
Opens: 12/01/2012    Deadline:  02/12/2013 @ 11:59 p.m. (ET)

SURF enables undergraduate students to conduct 10 consecutive weeks of mentored plant biology research while still undergraduates.

Eligibility: SURF welcomes applicants from any size institution worldwide. This includes those following academic calendars not fully aligned with US norms. Ideally, SURF applicants apply during their second year. Others who are well-qualified will be considered. Students at community colleges can apply (but may need to seek a mentor/lab at a different location).

All students must apply with the expectation that they will present their completed SURF research at Plant Biology 2014.

Mentors: Students must work with a mentor who is an ASPB member (including new members). Students without plant biology faculty at their home institution may arrange to conduct research with a mentor elsewhere. Mentor arrangements must be set prior to applying. Contact Katie Engen at ASPB for general advice on finding a mentor.

Funding: The fellowship gives a $4,000 summer stipend, a one year membership in ASPB, and $700 (to the mentor or institution) for materials. Recipients may not accept another salary or stipend for SURF research.

Plant Biology 2014: July 12-16, 2014 in Portland, Oregon
SURF winners must submit an abstract and present a poster at this ASPB annual conference. The $50 early-bird student registration fee is waived (other conference fees apply). Each fellowship also provides $575 for travel.

SURF winners are not eligible for any other travel grant from ASPB in the same year. Contact Katie Engen for cases of extreme financial need.

Applications: Students and their mentors can apply at http://surf.aspb.org
