My ASPB...

Every academic year when new graduate students join the Geisler & Geisler-Lee Systems Biology Laboratory, they are given a professional society membership which is closely related to their research project. So the students can learn about the resource from the professional society, in addition from the Geisler & Geisler-Lee Laboratory. In 2013 autumn, Ms. Alicia Bamber joined a genome assembly project and Mr. Belan Khalil did a cis-regulation in planta (in contrast to in silico) project. Alicia is a brilliant African American with a PROMPT (Proactive Recruitment of Multicultural Professionals for Tomorrow) assistantship and plans to become a science instructor. Belan holds a scholarship from the Iraqi government and aims to expand his tissue culture laboratory in Iraq (where he is a lecturer) to systems biology.  Thus a membership in the American Society of Plant Biologists (ASPB) fits perfectly with both Alicia and Belan’s research projects and graduate training. I believe the ASPB community will help mentor these two students mature into young scholars and next-generation scientific work force.

GAM 2013 Grand Prize Winner

I have been an ASPB member for only a short time, but it has already been a wonderful experience. As a member I was able to apply for the ASPB Minority Affairs Committee 2014 Recognition Travel Award and I was recently contacted that I was granted the award. This is a tremendous opportunity for me to attend Plant Biology 2014 that I would not have been able to afford without the help of ASPB. I also enjoy the bimonthly issues of the ASPB newsletter. I especially enjoy the student written Luminaries column. I was so inspired by this column I contacted Membership Committee chair, Dr. David Horvath, who encouraged me to write a column on my co-advisor Dr. Daniel Nickrent. I have come up with interesting questions that I believe could benefit other young plant biologists and also honor Dr. Nickrent's contributions to plant biology. The ASPB family has welcomed me with open arms, and I am so proud to be a member.
