The American Society of Plant Biologists (ASPB) has created this statement in order to demonstrate our firm commitment to privacy. The following discloses our information gathering and dissemination practices.

Use of the Information this Site Gathers and Tracks

We use your Internet Protocol (IP) address to help diagnose problems with our server and to administer our Web site. IP addresses are used, for example, to gather broad demographic information, but we do not link them to anything personally identifiable.

A cookie is a file that stores data on a user's computer or returns it to the web server. The data in the file is information a user has entered using an online form or generic information about the visiting user such as IP address and country. A cookie can store information temporarily (session cookies) or permanently (regular cookie).

ASPB uses permanent or temporary cookies for logging in to remember you when you've logged in. Cookies help the site remember your login upon return to eliminate your need to login again. They do not store any personal or financial information. You may choose "No" beside the "Save login:" option when logging in to use only a temporary session cookie. Session cookies will only last up to two hours without activity on the site. We also use session cookies in our forms to remember what you've filled out from one page to another in a form.

Online Forms

Several areas of ASPB Online (such as membership forms, publication order forms and online voting) require users to provide various types of information: contact information (like their names and e-mail addresses), unique identifiers (like their passwords), financial information (like their account or credit card numbers), and demographic information (like their address and zip code). Each type of information serves a different purpose, depending on where it is requested.

Unique identifiers (such as passwords) are collected to verify the user's identity. Contact information obtained from order forms may be used by ASPB only for promotional communications. Users may opt out of receiving communications at any time. Financial information that is collected is used to bill the user for products and services ordered. Financial information and all passwords will in no way be used for marketing purposes, nor will it be shared with any third parties unless the third party manages the billing for ASPB.

Member Information

As a member of ASPB, we use member contact information from the application form to send the user information about membership discounts and information and the ASPB News. Membership contact information is also used to get in touch with the member when necessary for administrative purposes. The online Membership Directory is provided for informational purposes and members may opt out of being listed in the online directory at the time of application or contact ASPB to be removed.

On occasion, ASPB may rent their membership list to other plant biology organizations. The rented lists are mailing addresses only and do not include emails, phone numbers, or any other information collected by ASPB. Members have the option to opt out of receiving communications from others when joining or renewing membership.  Third parties are required to sign an agreement for agreed-upon use of member information.  ASPB is not responsible for any actions resulting in mis-use in which third party partners handle the user data they were entrusted with.

ASPB will use email as a method to communicate with members and colleagues regarding ASPB-related information. Users may opt-out of receiving emails at any time. Emails sent may include but are not limited to the ASPB Newsletter, the Member Update, and other notifications regarding ASPB-related information. Notices of opportunities and information external to ASPB, that carry value or are of direct interest to membership, will only be sent via email within the Member Update and made available online at the discretion of ASPB's Membership Committee.

Communications From Underage Individuals

ASPB will not initiate communication with any individual under the age of 18. If an underage individual initiates communication for specific information on plant biology, we will respond to their email with generic information and ask them to involve their parent/guardian in further communications. Public forums as defined below are typically not monitored by ASPB directly. Parents should caution children when participating on any public forum.

Security Capabilities and Financial Information

Financial information may be collected online when ordering publications or in making payment for membership. The online forms are within an SSL secured site using https. The SSL cert is being provided by Verisign and can be verified by selecting the logo to the right. This encrypts the information during the transaction so as to secure the cardholder data from access by unauthorized users.
