High-throughput sequencing platforms are emerging as the heir to the ubiquitous microarray, a highly parallel way to assess the state of the DNA or RNA in a sample. These assays have the potential to accelerate biological discovery as comprehensive analyses of genomes, meta-genomes, and transcriptomes becomes increasingly inexpensive and routine. In tandem with sequencing technology, advances in high-throughput mass spectrometry are making it possible to investigate the outcomes of differential gene expression through simultaneous measurement of metabolites, transcriptomes, and epigenomes. However, as with microarrays, the data challenges are significant: Interpreting these vast data sets requires user-friendly but powerful visualization and modeling tools that promote exploration, analysis, and discovery. This workshop is designed to showcase paths to successful utilization of high-throughput data while providing a solid understanding of how specific software tools influence and facilitate discovery. It includes presentations describing research results and motivating questions (Thursday) followed by guided tutorials (Friday) for attendees to gain hands-on practical experience with bioinformatic data analysis and visualization methods. Attendees select workshop sessions on a first-come first-serve basis. Presentations and demonstration data sets will be available for participants to take home for use in research and teaching.
